Green Day to return to headline Reading/Leeds festivals

Green Day are the final headliner to be confirmed for this year's Reading and Leeds festival.

They'll join previously announced acts Eminem and Biffy Clyro in topping the bill at the event, which takes place between Friday 23 and Sunday 25 August.

The US rockers performed a secret set at last year's event, a month before singer Billie Joe Armstrong started treatment for substance abuse.

French band Phoenix will headline the NME/Radio 1 stage.

Green Day are currently playing their first gigs back after taking a break.

The band cancelled all their commitments for five months last October after Billie Joe Armstrong said he was "seeking help" for substance abuse.

Rappers A$AP Rocky and Azealia Banks will also play this year's Reading and Leeds, as well as BBC Sound Of 2013 winners Haim.

Other acts joining the bill include Harlem Shake star Baauer, UK band Bastille and dance act Chase & Status.

Alex Clare, The Blackout, Brand New, Disclosure, Editors, Frank Turner, Hadouken!, Imagine Dragons and Knife Party will also play as will The Lumineers, Magnetic Man, Nine Inch Nails, The Strypes, Tame Impala, Modestep, Palma Violets, The 1975, White Lies, Major Lazer.

As previously announced, two extra stages will be added at this year's Reading and Leeds events.

There will be a BBC Radio 1 dance stage and BBC Radio 1Xtra stage, headlined by London grime collective Boy Better Know.

Last year 87,000 fans at Reading's Richfield Avenue site and 75,000 at Leeds' Bramham Park saw performances from headliners Foo Fighters, The Cure and Kasabian.
