Batman's sidekick Robin is to be killed off in the next issue of the comic, say publishers DC.

In an interview with the New York Post, writer Grant Morrison confirmed that the latest Boy Wonder would die in tomorrow's edition.

This is not the first time that Robin has died. Jason Todd was killed by the Joker in 1988 while serving as Batman's aide.

Damian Wayne, the 10-year-old son of billionaire Bruce Wayne, is now playing the role of Robin in the Batman Incorporated series.

His mother is Talia, the beautiful daughter of one of Batman's deadliest enemies, Ra's al Ghul - played by Liam Neeson in Christopher Nolan's Batman trilogy.

DC Comics say that he will be killed by a genetic clone of himself.

Grant Morrison says he used elements of his own parents' divorce as inspiration for the story.

"It's all about the family and the family going to hell," he added.

"The two adults in the story are both culpable. The kid's the good guy."

This is the first time that Robin will die at the height of his popularity.

"What we did was turn this little monster [Damian Wayne] into a superhero," said Grant Morrison.

"He's a little brat, but he's a super-brat."

Dick Grayson, who served as the first Robin starting in 1940, is one of the best known versions of the hero.

Jason Todd was disliked by Batman and Robin fans and a phone poll was launched for them to decide whether or not he should be killed off by the writers.

Batman Incorporated issue eight goes on sale on Wednesday 27 February.
