The Strokes

The Strokes bass player Nikolai Fraiture says he feels "good" about the atmosphere in the band, ahead of the release of their new album.

Speaking to BBC Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe, the musician said that he was positive about the record and that making it was "like the good old days".

Strokes studio albums

  • Is This It (2001)
  • Room on Fire (2003)
  • First Impressions of Earth (2006)
  • Angles (2011)
  • Comedown Machine (2013)

Despite the new material, he would not confirm whether the band would be touring again saying he didn't know.

However, he added that he "would love to" go on the road with The Strokes.

There was a five-year gap between their third studio album First Impressions of Earth in 2006 and 2011's Angles.

This time fans have only had to wait for two years for Comedown Machine, which is due out in March.

Lead singer Julian Casablancas did not join the rest of the band in the studio for much of the making of Angles, recording his material separately.

Nikolai Fraiture confirmed that this time The Strokes mainly worked together.

"It was mostly all done together at Electric Lady [Studios] for the most part," he said.

"It was all five of us going back and forth hashing out an album like the good old days."

He also spoke about how the decision to make another record, relatively soon after the last, came about.

Right now we just finished the album and I feel good about it and I feel good about the atmosphere in the band. Hopefully it continues

"We got off tour and we were all in New York and we had these songs," he said. "Some were left over from the other album, some were new.

"We just had all this stuff to work on and we tested it out. We rehearsed at Electric Lady at a smaller studio and it was working, so we just went with it."

While the feeling in the band has not always been positive, Nikolai Fraiture said that at the moment things were going well.

"When you make music you go up and down," he admitted. "Sometimes you feel strong, sometimes scared.

"Right now we just finished the album and I feel good about it and I feel good about the atmosphere in the band.

"Hopefully it continues."

The Strokes also includes guitarist Nick Valensi, guitarist Albert Hammond, Jr. and drummer Fabrizio Moretti.

Comedown Machine will be released on 25 March. The first single from the album, All the Time, is out now.
