BBC Three says the current series of Being Human will be the show's last.

A stand alone pilot episode hit TV screens in 2008 and was soon commissioned into a regular series for Sunday nights.

The show's werewolf, vampire and ghost characters proved popular with viewers, reaching a peak audience of 1.6 million viewers in its Sunday night slot.

Channel bosses say the show will reach an 'apocalyptic' ending when the three will take on the devil.

During its five year run the show has picked up a series of prizes, including three Writer's Guilds Awards and one TV Choice Award in 2011.

Cult following

Executive Producer Rob Pursey said working on the show has been a truly great experience.

"From the first one-hour pilot, all the way through to this climactic series, we've been given real creative freedom and encouragement.

"It's a credit to BBC Three that such an unusual idea has been allowed to flourish and evolve in its own unique way".

The show is one of BBC Three's most successful programmes and has also developed a cult following in America.

None of the show's original cast Aiden Turner (Vampire), Russell Tovey (Werewolf) or Lenora Crichlow (Ghost) made it through to the current series.

Instead it will be up to Vampire Hal (Damien Molony), Werewolf Tom (Michael Socha) and Ghost Alex (Kate Bracken) to deal with the return of Mr Rook, the shady figure whose government department protects the human world from otherworldly beings.
