Denzel Washington says the quality of the script and the complexity of his character led to him taking the role in new movie Flight.

The actor has been nominated for an Oscar for his part as Whip Whitaker, an airline pilot who is involved in a plane crash and forced to deal with his drinking problem.

The film is directed by Back to the Future and Forrest Gump director Robert Zemeckis in his first live-action film in more than a decade.

The actor was speaking to Newsbeat's Al Moloney.

Flight is released in the UK on 1 February.
