Frank Ocean has been nominated for the outstanding music artist award by the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD).

The American organisation monitors, how gay, lesbian, bi-sexual and transgender people are represented in the media.

The musician has been recognised for his album Channel Orange.

Frank Ocean made headlines last year when he became one of the first hip-hop artists to reveal publicly that he is gay.

Other artists in the outstanding music artist category include Adam Lambert, Gossip and Scissor Sisters.

Cloud Atlas, The Perks of Being a Wallflower and The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel have all been nominated for outstanding film.

Television programmes to be recognised include Glee, Grey's Anatomy, Modern Family and True Blood.

American Horror Story: Asylum has also got a nod for outstanding TV movie or mini-series.

This will be the 24th annual GLAAD awards and the winners will be announced in a series of galas in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco from March until May.

GLAAD was founded more than 25 years ago to encourage positive representations of gay people and their lives in the wake of the media reporting on Aids.
