Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway have spoken about the dangers involved in preparing for their respective roles in Les Misérables.

Hathaway describes her regime as a "starvation diet" which was necessary to portray the plight of her character.

The film is adapted from the long-running stage musical, which is based on Victor Hugo's epic French novel set in 19th Century France.

It is up for eight Oscars including best picture, best actor for Hugh Jackman and best supporting actress for Anne Hathaway.

Les Misérables is also nominated for nine awards at this year's Baftas.
