X-Men director Bryan Singer has announced that Hugh Jackman will join the cast of the new comic book film.

Due in 2014, X-Men: Days Of Future Past is based on the popular comic arc and will feature both the old and young versions of several X-Men characters.

Singer announced the news via his Twitter account commenting that he was "very excited" to have the Australian reprise his role as Wolverine.

Newsbeat recently spoke to Jackman and his co-star Sir Ian McKellen about their involvement in the project.

Sir Ian said that while he had been announced by Singer as joining the cast, he had yet to work it around his Hobbit filming schedule.

The X-Men films are thought to have taken more than $2bn (£1.25bn) worldwide.
