Justin Bieber wins the most awards at the 40th AMAs

Justin Bieber came out on top at the American Music Awards in Los Angeles, picking up all the awards he was nominated for. One Direction and The Wanted went home empty handed as Bieber was voted best pop/rock male, favourite pop or rock album and favourite artist of the year.

Nicki Minaj performed her new song Freedom on a winter wonderland stage. She won two of the four awards she was nominated for; favourite rap/hip hop artist and favourite rap/hip hop album for Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.

Chris Brown was joined on stage by Ludacris and Swizz Beats to perform Everyday Birthday. The event, held in LA's Nokia Theatre, also featured performances from Kelly Clarkson, The Wanted and Linkin Park.

Carly Rae Jepsen performed her hit single Call Me Maybe. She also accepted the award for best new artist of the year, saying "this is amazing, thank you so, so, so, so, so, so much".

Psy was joined on stage to close the awards by 1980s rapper MC Hammer. They performed a mash up of Gangnam Style and 2 Legit 2 Quit. Psy was also named the AMA new media honouree for his viral hit music video.

Usher was first on stage to perform a medley of songs including Numb, Climax and Can't Stop Won't Stop. He also won the award for best soul/R&B male.

Taylor Swift won the favourite female country artist award before going on stage to sing I Knew You Were Trouble. During her performance she changed her light coloured dress for a red corset.

Christina Aguilera joined Pitbull during his performance to sing their collaboration Feel This Moment. Earlier on she did her own set including Army Of Me.

Pink performed Try as part of the AMA ceremony. The nominees were selected based on sales and airplay and fans chose the winners by voting online.

Justin Bieber dedicated his first win of the evening to his mother, Pattie Mallette. "This is for all the haters who thought that maybe I was just here for one or two years, but I feel like I am going to be here for a very long time," he added.
