Thor and Captain America from Avengers

The Avengers sequel will not be released until 1 May 2015, according to Disney and Marvel Studios.

They announced last week that Joss Whedon would be back to write and direct the untitled follow-up.

The original film featured Marvel comic book heroes including Robert Downey Jr. as Iron Man, Chris Evans as Captain America, Mark Ruffalo as the Hulk and Chris Hemsworth as Thor.

The film has taken nearly $1.5 billion (£954m) at the box office worldwide.

There will be plenty of Marvel films released in the build up to The Avengers sequel.

Thor: The Dark World is out in November 2013 followed by a Captain America sequel in April 2014.

Meanwhile, production on Iron Man 3, due out next May, is on hold after Robert Downey Jr. hurt his foot during filming.

Marvel Studios said that the actor was injured while performing a stunt and that there would be a short delay in production while he gets better.

The 47-year-old actor is shooting the third instalment in the superhero franchise in North Carolina.
