BBC Radio 1Xtra celebrates its 10th birthday. The station has helped to launch the careers of the likes of Dizzee Rascal, Tinie Tempah, Tinchy Stryder and Emeli Sande, who is pictured here performing at Radio 1's Hackney weekend. The sister station of Radio 1 launched at 6pm on 16 August 2002.

Radio 1Xtra was code named Network X while the BBC was waiting to get the go-ahead from the government who said the station "must play contemporary black music aimed at a young audience". The first ever show was presented by Mike Anthony (left) and Treble T (right) from DJ collective Rampage.
-
Before the station launch, 1Xtra shows were broadcast on Radio 1, so new listeners could get a taste of what was to come. 1Xtra supported Tinie Tempah from the start of his career. The rapper's breakthrough track Pass Out was first played on 1Xtra.
-
Dizzee Rascal's track I Luv U was on the first ever 1Xtra playlist.

Kanye West's first ever track was first playlisted on 1Xtra. The station scheduled special shows for his Graduation album and a performance at Maida Vale studios. Here the rapper is pictured with Kim Kardashian at Paris Fashion Week, last month.

Chase & Status were played on 1Xtra from their very first release in 2003. Plan B was also supported by the radio station from 2004 with his records Kidz and Dead & Buried.

1Xtra was the first radio station to playlist Amy Winehouse's Rehab.
-
Wiley's track Heatwave has been one of this year's summer anthems. 1Xtra takes credit for supporting the artist from every one of his underground albums and mix tapes to his hit single.
-
To celebrate 1Xtra's 10th Birthday mid-morning presenter Trevor Nelson hosted some special live sessions from Jessie J, Professor Green, Wretch 32 and Devlin at Maida Vale.
