One Direction to perform at MTV Video Music Awards 2012

The former X Factor act are up for two awards

One Direction will perform at this year's MTV Video Music Awards, say organisers.

The band, whose album is the top selling debut in the US this year, are nominated in the best new artist and best pop video categories.

Drake and Rihanna lead the nominations with five each while Katy Perry is up for a prize in four categories.

Alicia Keys will also play at the 6 September awards, with more acts still to be announced.

One Direction have had Stateside success with debut album Up All Night.

When it was released in March, it made history by going straight to the top of the Billboard chart.

The five-piece are up against the likes of The Wanted, Frank Ocean and Carly Rae Jepsen in the best new artist category.

Rihanna tops off another successful year by getting five nods, including for the main prize - video of the year, where We Found Love is nominated.

Her collaboration with Drake, Take Care, is also competing in the same category.

Drake is also up for other awards, such as best hip hop video and best male video.

Other acts nominated include Lana Del Rey, Gotye and Justin Bieber.

MTV bosses also said that Alicia Keys would be debuting a brand new track from her upcoming album at the LA ceremony.
