Muse carried the Olympic torch through their home town Teignmouth, Devon in May
Muse have revealed how they were chosen to write the official song for this year's Olympic Games in London.
Frontman Matt Bellamy said: "Someone approached me about a year ago, I can't say who."
The band were talking last night on Radio 1's Zane Lowe show, where the track Survival had its first play.
"I wrote the song with a lot of guitar and piano," Matt said. The Devon rock band then put it on hold for a while as they didn't have any lyrics.
Then a little while later they were asked to play the Olympic Games closing ceremony.
"By then the song had developed, so we played the track to the Olympic people. They loved it and asked if it could be the official tune."

The track will be played out during sporting sessions and as athletes enter the stadium.
"It was a sort of epic music idea, involving a choir and stuff."
The Devon rock band wanted the lyrics to be about "what it is to compete and be determined to win and against all the odds."
"But also the truthful part of the competitive side. We wanted to make a song that tuned into the competition."
Talking to Zane Lowe last night on Radio 1, Muse also revealed a few other details about their forthcoming album The 2nd Law.
"Obviously we are still in the process of finishing it. It's very diverse, with a bigger emphasis on groove."
Survival is on the new album, but Matt Bellamy said there were also plans to release another single.
"The other single is pretty stripped down and minimal. But the Olympic single, you can't really go much further than that in terms of silliness, craziness and epic-ness."
Earlier this month, the band announced details of a UK arena tour starting in October.
