Russell Brand will host this year's MTV movie awards ceremony.

The stand up and star of the upcoming film Rock of Ages will lead the fan-voted awards for the biggest movies of 2012.

The US event takes place at the Gibson Amphitheatre in Universal City, California on Monday 4 June.

Previous hosts of the MTV movie awards include Ben Stiller, Mike Myers and Justin Timberlake.

Russell Brand said: "This year's awards will be more impressive than The Avengers and you won't have to wait an hour for someone to Hulk out."

Film nominees include Drive, Like Crazy, The Descendants, The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, and My Week with Marilyn.

The actor hosted the MTV video movie awards (VMA) in 2008 and returned to host the 2009 VMAs.

It is reported that Russell Brand and singer Katy Perry first began their relationship at the 2008 VMAs.

The couple were married at a tiger reserve in India in 2010, but Russell Brand filed for a divorce just over a year later.
