David Gandy has told Newsbeat he and Mollie King had a "mature" break-up.
The supermodel had been dating the Saturdays singer for 10 months but last week it was reported they had separated.
Speaking at the Elle Style Awards, he said: "It's never nice when something ends. Relationships are a lot about timing and it wasn't quite right at this time."
"We're both at the top of our careers and we want that to continue."
The 32-year-old, who has previously modelled for Dolce & Gabbana, says King is in Los Angeles with The Saturdays.
"They're doing TV shows and signings in LA so it's a busy time for them," he said. "And I've just come back from LA so you can see how we always switch over."
Gandy says he and King are still on good terms despite the separation.
"I think we've been mature about the situation. We've said it's not the right time but you never know in the future," he said.
"It was 10 months and she's a remarkable girl. She's so vibrant and lovely to be around and of course it's a bit painful but that's life."
The Saturdays released their debut single If This Is Love in 2008, which reached number eight in the UK singles chart.
Since then, they've had a string of chart hits including Up, Missing You, Ego and Forever Is Over.
