Hollywood actress Natalie Portman has given birth to her first child.

The star, who won this year's best actress Oscar for her role in Black Swan, has had a boy according to a report by People Magazine.

Portman, who turned 30 last week, announced she was pregnant in December and that she planned to marry choreographer Benjamin Millepied.

The pair met on the set of Black Swan, in which the actress played a self-mutilating ballerina.

US chat show host Ellen DeGeneres tweeted her congratulations.

She said: "I'm so happy for my dance protégée Natalie Portman and her new baby boy! Congratulations!"

Lindsay Lohan wrote: "Congrats to #natalieportman for her beautiful baby boy!"

The US actress rose to fame playing the protégée of a hitman in 1994's Leon and appeared in the Star Wars prequels as Luke Skywalker and Princess Leia's mother.

She's also recently appeared in romantic comedy No Strings Attached with Ashton Kutcher.
