BBC Radio 1 DJ Annie Nightingale said she had the "best job in the world"

BBC Radio 1 is planning a night of special programmes in honour of long-standing DJ Annie Nightingale.

Since becoming Radio 1's first female presenter back in 1970, Annie has championed new music at the station for 40 years.

Her musical background ranges from acid house, to punk, to drum and bass and she's been on tour with bands including The Police, The Who and The Rolling Stones.

She holds the crown of Radio 1's longest-serving presenter and her weekly show (Fridays from 2am-4am) has won best radio show at the International Breakspoll Awards for the last five years in a row.

In 2002 she was honoured with an MBE for her services to broadcasting and two years later became the only female to be inducted into the Radio Academy Hall of Fame.

Tribute concert

The special night of programmes will take place on 9 September at 7pm and kicks off with a two-hour documentary presented by Zane Lowe.

A three-hour tribute concert from Maida Vale will follow, featuring performers chosen by Annie, including Tinchy Stryder, Professor Green, I Blame Coco, Fatboy Slim and Primal Scream.

Then there will be two hours' worth of the best music Annie's played from the last 40 years, with the best of her guest mixes from 2am until 4am.

Annie described her job as the "best in the world", adding: "I'm always looking forward, planning the next show, the next guest mix, the next festival broadcast.

"So this night will be a chance to celebrate some awesome milestones and the truly amazing musical soundtrack of my life at BBC Radio 1."

An hour-long documentary on the DJ's career is also planned for BBC Four.

'A Night with Annie Nightingale' begins at 7pm on Thursday 9 September on BBC Radio 1.
