A US sailor has been shot dead on board a destroyer docked at a Virginia naval base by a gunman who was then killed by security forces.

The male suspect behind Monday night's attack on the USS Mahan was a civilian who had access to Naval Station Norfolk, said US officials.

The facility, which is thought to be the world's largest naval base, was briefly placed on lockdown.

The navy said it would name both men once their next of kin were notified.

It is unclear if the civilian had a motive for the shooting.
