Marco Rubio: The next US president?

9 December 2013 Last updated at 11:21 GMT

US Senator Marco Rubio has emerged as a possible candidate for the next president of the United States.

It has been said he has the ability to appeal to both the wings of his warring Republican party and he is trying to bring them together.

Following a speech at London based think tank Chatham House, he told the Today programme's Justin Webb that America "is divided on many political issues".

He added that the country is currently "trying to figure out the proper role of government in our society and economy, given the unique challenges of the 21st Century".

First broadcast on the Today programme on Monday 9 December.
