Syria crisis: 'America will stand up' - Boehner

4 September 2013 Last updated at 09:56 BST

The Republican Speaker of the House of Representatives, John Boehner, has endorsed President Obama's call for military action in Syria.

Senators have agreed on a draft resolution backing the use of US military force in the country.

The BBC's North America editor Mark Mardell said Mr Boehner's strong backing must be a relief for Mr Obama, as he is usually a fierce critic of the president.

Speaking outside the White House following a meeting of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee over the crisis, Mr Boenher said: "This is something that the United States as a country needs to do. I am going to support the President's call for action and I believe that my colleagues should support this call for action."
