Obama: Congress should vote on Syria

31 August 2013 Last updated at 23:31 BST

President Barack Obama has announced that he will seek Congressional approval for military action against Syria.

The announcement came as a surprise to many who had thought that military strikes against Syria could be imminent.

But President Obama said the military operation could happen tomorrow, next week or in a month's time.

The White House said the refusal of British MPs to secure support for armed action had influenced its thinking.

Mark Mardell reports.
