US judge apologises for rape comments

29 August 2013 Last updated at 14:15 BST

A judge in the US has come under fire for describing a 14-year-old girl who was raped by her teacher as "older than her chronological age" and as much in control as her rapist.

There have been calls for the resignation of District Judge G. Todd Baugh, who made the comments while sentencing former high school teacher Stacey Rambold, 54.

His victim took her own life in 2010, just before her 17th birthday whilst the criminal case was pending.

Judge Baugh, 71, has said his comments were "demeaning to all women".
