Two people, the pilot and co-pilot, were killed when a UPS cargo plane crashed as it approached an airport in Birmingham, Alabama in the US.

Officials say the aircraft went down in a grassy field near Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport before dawn on Wednesday.

Robert Sumwalt of the National Transportation Safety Board expressed his ''sincere condolences'' to the families of the people who died.

He added that he was ''optimistic'' that the black boxes of the aircraft would be recovered.
