US special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan James Dobbins has said he believes Afghan President Hamid Karzai would be "warm" to talks with the Taliban.

He expressed hope that talks could begin before the presidential campaign season opens in Afghanistan, ahead of elections there next year.

The US is scheduled to withdraw its forces from Afghanistan at the end of 2014.
