Superman and Batman are to appear in the same film for the first time, it has been revealed, to the delight of many fans of the popular characters.

The surprise announcement was made by Zack Snyder, who directed the most recent Superman film Man of Steel.

But speaking at a comic convention in San Diego, California, Mr Snyder said the script was still being written.

Production is expected to begin next year and the film is scheduled for release in the summer of 2015.

Warner Bros confirmed that the two superheroes would team up for the first time.

Henry Cavill speaks at Comic-Con in San Diego

British actor Henry Cavill - who starred in Man of Steel - will again play Superman.

However, an actor for the new Batman is yet to be cast.

"They're both alpha males," fan Benjamin Ha was quoted as saying by the Associated Press. He added that he expected fireworks in the new film.

For many comic book enthusiasts it is a dream come true in what promises to be the ultimate superhero adventure, the BBC's Peter Bowes in Los Angeles reports.

The enduring popularity of Superman and Batman has seen the latest films featuring the two characters earn revenues of more than $1bn (£655m) between them.

Sadly Andrew, while you may condemn the fare produced the fact remains the masses you consider with such contempt as sheep with no taste are the ones who lap it up and want more. If they didnt like it would they fork over money for the hash served to them over and again would they? Your tastes are catered by Ethan Hawke in films abt divorced bees or some such, let the masses have their fun.

This is a sad commentary about the state of Hollywood that the movies that receive the biggest budgets are dumb explosion-packed popcorn vehicles aimed at fourteen year-old boys. Somehow, Hollywood seems to have convinced everyone else that this is good entertainment.

@ 66 It's not the format some people object to, it's the way modern day producers over-intellectualize very basic children's concepts in order to continually squeeze cash out of impressionable adults. Some modern day comics do explore complex narratives, but it's historical revisionism to pretend every DC comic was written with a 32 year old male in mind - it was simply childish distraction.

Superman and Batman were best friends, knew each other's secret identity, and worked very cooperatively back when Bud Collier was playing Superman. I'm going back about 70 years here, so your experience might be a bit different. However, Bud was a great Superman, and those radio shows were done very well, in case you are interested.

Surely Batman would feel redundant after all Superman is Superman being virtually invincible, faster, stronger, doesn't need to fill his batmobile with regular unleaded or use a utility belt he'd get the job done in a fraction of time although he did spend inordinate amounts of time romancing Lois Lane, but Batman had a taste for the ladies as well. No, not a good team up really just doesnt work.

"For many comic book enthusiasts it is a dream come true in what promises to be the ultimate superhero adventure,"

Given that it will employ only TWO superheroes out of the many available, how can this be the "ultimate"?

Wondering what any person under the age of 35 makes of the older population's fascination with two superheroes, now in their late 70's?
Story-telling previously expanded mid-90's to Super-Mario, now rescinded to Gotham's Planet Daily.

31.ginny222 "Sign of time"? DC Comics have combined characters in stories for at least 50 years. I remember reading them in the 60's.

I hope the Batman role is suitably dark to counterpoint the All American Superman. Whilst my favourite will always be Adam West, I think the descent into Darkness of the later Batman films has given validity to the character.

Wow hope they don't screw it up. If they spend good time on it and not just do it for purely money purposes it could be good. Fear it could be rushed and be rubbish though

I fear for this film if it goes ahead. Just because you can have Batman and Superman gallivanting around in the comics, doesn't mean it'd work in film too. The characters are just too different. It reeks of 'LET'S TRY TO MAKE OUR OWN AVENGERS FRANCHISE' from the studios. Pull the plug on this someone.
