As cardinals in Rome discuss the future of the church, high on their list of priorities is tackling the ongoing fall out from the clergy sexual abuse crisis.

The crisis first erupted a decade ago in the United States and soon engulfed many countries.

In America, the legacy of cover-ups by the hierarchy has cost the church in dollars and in reputation.
