John Kerry to be next US Secretary of State

The US Senate has approved John Kerry as the next secretary of state by an overwhelming vote.

President Obama chose Mr Kerry to replace Hillary Clinton who stands down on Friday.

Senator Kerry was the Democratic Party's unsuccessful candidate in the 2004 presidential election.

He served on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee for twenty eight years and was its leader for the last four years.
