Leon Panetta announces US female front line ban lifted

Help

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta is expected to announce the overturning of a ban on women serving on the front line of combat situations.

The move, which overturns a 1994 ruling, could open hundreds of thousands of frontline positions and elite commando jobs to women.

The US military will have until 2016 to argue for any specific posts they think should remain closed to women.
