The US House of Representatives has observed a moment of silence for the victims of the school shooting in Newtown, Connecticut.

Twenty children and six adults were killed at Sandy Hook school.

The gunman has been named as Adam Lanza, who took his own life at the end of a killing spree that began with him shooting dead his own mother.

Congressman Christopher Murphy delivered some brief remarks before the silence was held.
