The vice-presidential candidates explained their contrasting views on abortion, during their debate in Kentucky.

Vice President Joe Biden said he personally followed the Catholic Church's guidance but argued that it was each individual woman's right to choose.

Republican Paul Ryan outlined his opposition to abortion and criticised the Obama administration for healthcare policies he claimed force religious institutions to provide services that clash with their beliefs.
