Burmese pro-democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi has received the Congressional Gold Medal, which she was awarded in absentia in 2008, while under house arrest.

In her acceptance speech before the US Congress, she said it was one of the most moving days of her life.

Ms Suu Kyi added: "From the depths of my heart I thank you, the people of the America...for keeping us in your hearts in the dark years when freedom seemed beyond our reach."
