US First Lady Michelle Obama has paid tribute to her husband at the Democratic convention in Charlotte, North Carolina.

Speaking on the first night of the event she said: "I've gotten to see up close and personal what being president really looks like."

She also noted the "extraordinary privilege" of serving as first lady.

Democrats are holding their three-day nominating convention as they prepare to take on Mitt Romney and the Republicans for the White House in November.
