US Democrats have launched their national convention, to make the case that the US economy's best chance of revival lies in re-electing President Barack Obama.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, a former White House chief of staff, and First Lady Michelle Obama are the main attractions on the first night of the event in Charlotte, North Carolina.
