Ex-Seals attack Obama's 'leaks' over Bin Laden

The video says national security leaks could be harmful to Americans

However nasty this election campaign gets, one thing no-one can take away from President Barack Obama is that he was in charge when Osama Bin Laden was killed.

If you think that, think again.

A tough new advert has been put out by a group calling themselves Special Ops OPSEC Education Fund, who say their mission is to "STOP the politicians, President Obama and others, from politically capitalizing on US national security operations and secrets!"

The organisation, which claims to be non-partisan despite being fronted by several Republicans, accuses the White House of putting national security at risk by leaking secrets.

But its main purpose is to attack President Obama for what it calls his bragging about the killing of Bin Laden and his claim of all the credit for a military operation.

Obama certainly did instantly seek maximum political advantage and rather laid it on with a trowel. Remember that moody picture of him watching the op?

After the killing, the White House and the president took pains to suggest that the operation wasn't something that just happened, but was a presidential priority.

They stressed it required Obama to make a difficult and agonising decision to authorise the actual mission, against the wishes of many advisors.

To counter this image a former Navy Seal Ben Smith says: "Mr President, you did not kill Bin Laden, America did."

The Obama campaign has accused the group of "Swift Boat tactics", recalling a highly effective ad from 2004 which questioned John Kerry's Vietnam record.

The new group rejects the accusation, saying that campaign was about narrow personal details, but theirs is about wider issues of national security.

At first sight this is only going to persuade the converted.

But the general thrust is in line with the current line from Mitt Romney's campaign.

Obama's biggest positive is his "likeability rating".

This suggestion that he's boastful and politically vain, like Romney's argument that Team Obama are running a campaign of hate and anger, is designed to undermine the president's personal appeal.

Some, of course, need no persuading.

The former Seal, Ben Smith, in an article (I am presuming there are not two former Navy Seals called Ben Smith) is not as terse as in the video, but even more dramatic.

He warns that America is in the middle of a "cold civil war", which is about to turn hot as "the Obama regime running our country into the ground" prepares to impose martial law.

He writes: "Keep preparing for rough times ahead. Stock your pantry in preparation for lean days, even as the regime attempts to make such things illegal.

"Focus your mind on liberty, that it should never die. I cannot tell you exactly what is coming but I know, as do you, that something unprecedented in American history, perhaps even all human history, is coming soon."

Before we are all forced to take to the hills, the verbal skirmishing will get harsher yet.

MagicKirin (post 57) simply has to be joking. I've never seen Karl Rove and the word "honourable" (or honrable) in the same sentence before.

I am glad to fight the media bias we have honrable men like Karl Rove, Sheldon Adelson and the Koch brothers

Seriously? Obama DID NOT KILL bin Laden, Navy Seal Team 6 did.. Obummer gave the "ok", which he could have given in 2010! Do me a favor, quit stereotyping and say Republican's are "this", or do "this" as that is libelous towards me because YES, I am a Conservative Republican! Name the person or zip it!

I'm an American expatriate who has worked for the US military, and honestly I don't recognise my own country sometimes. This is a disgusting use of veterans and unwitting testimony to why civilians must be in charge of the military, even when they're wrong. I'm ashamed to see this advertisement not because I vote democrat but because I'm citizen.

There are far too many security leaks coming out of the Obama White House portraying Obama as a tough guy but which are endangering the lives of the people on the front lines by disclosing operational details. The reset button will have to wait until after the election.

I resent chicken hawks like Cheney and privileged opt outs like GWB portraying themselves as knowledgeable about the military. Kerry re-upped when he could have Bushed out, he was in combat and injured. How many purple hearts were there in the Bush Chicken Hawk admin?

You are the same, a propagandist. How many service members DON'T support these FOX puppets.

I trust most Republican voters would find this over the top. Clearly Mr Smith does not speak for all Navy Seals. Like the steel worker blaming Mr Romney for his wife’s cancer, this is just one disgruntled man. But today both parties are willing to promote this sort of thing, apparently without fear of backlash. Something is very wrong.

The spike in gun purchasing after Obama was elected shows just how many paranoid people there are out there. "
I remember the gun/ammunition spike happening because folk were afraid of strict gun control laws being imposed.I guess that could be called paranoia.I think gun control didn't happen because it was not the right time politically, not because they didn't consider it.

"Do Republicans take Americans for fools?"
Of course they do, and for good reason. Didn't we let them elect GWB twice? Remember, "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me." People fooled by Swift Boat v 2012, are complete fools because they have been fooled thrice.

When the funders of such ads refuse to identify themselves, it gives us a pretty good idea of how much pride they take in their product.

Anyone remember what Karl Rove and the Republicans did to Vietnam Veteran Max Cleland in the 2002 Senate race in Georgia? Karl Rove is back. There is no lie too disgraceful for Rove to create into an ad.

I agree with carolyn-lasvegas (20), the true threat to the existence of the US is the Republican party, which for decades has done all it can to bankrupt and dismantle the federal government. Read "The Wrecking Crew: How Conservatives Rule" by Thomas Frank. Rough times will come when the wealthy rule the land without restraint.

Typical FOX/GOP/TEA Party propaganda. If they were opposed to the president on reasonable grounds they might persuade me, this kind of over-the-top propaganda just makes me more likely to support the president.

Quick , quick , send up another smoke screen of total bunkum to divert attention from the GOP being totally useless and twisted . At what point in the past year has PRESIDENT Obama talked about how he took out Bin Laden , or any other credit for it . Another bunch of twaddle that will influence the non thinking to vote without questioning .
