What are conditions like inside notorious Rikers Island jail?

Help

The head of the International Monetary Fund, Dominique Strauss-Kahn, who has been accused of an alleged sexual assault on a hotel maid, is on suicide watch at Rikers Island jail.

Former New York detective Lou Savelli told BBC Radio 5 live: "It has the ability to hold up to 35,000 inmates... it's the biggest city jail.

"At Rikers Island he'd be sent on a bus with other inmates," Mr Savelli told Rhod Sharp on the Up All Night programme.

"Typical inmates - drug dealers, maybe petty criminals, maybe some rapists, robbers, murderers. Probably mostly drug dealers and gang members."
