New York cab driver opposes plan for new uniform taxi

Nothing screams New York more loudly than the city's yellow cab, but officials hope the next generation of taxis will be more green.

Sixteen different models of taxi are currently being made by nine different manufacturers, although the majority are Ford's Crown Victoria.

But the New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission is thinking of giving one manufacturer the contract to build all of New York's cabs, with a more fuel-efficient model.

The winner of the competition will be announced in mid-January 2011.

Veteran taxi driver John Caines told BBC News why he is dedicated to his Crown Victoria and against the new plan.
