On patrol in Afghanistan with the 101st Airborne division

Help

The iconic 101st Airborne division of the US Army has arrived in Afghanistan as the last of the 30,000 strong surge that America hopes will turn the tide against the Taliban.

Around 4,000 troops from the division are being stationed in Paktika province, near the border with Pakistan.

The Taliban are entrenched in the area but, with greater manpower, the "Screaming Eagles" hope to seize the initiative.

Quentin Sommerville joined some of the men of the 101st as they went on foot patrol near the village of Zerok.
