A former Indian junior diplomat held three months ago on suspicion of spying for Pakistan has been charged under the official secrets act, police said.

Madhuri Gupta was second secretary in the Indian embassy's press and information service in Pakistan's capital Islamabad.

Police arrived at the 53-year-old's home after she was called back to the Indian capital Delhi in April.

It is thought she could face between three and 14 years' jail if convicted.

Deputy Police Commissioner Shibesh Singh told news agency AFP that she had been charged under three sections of the official secrets act.

According to Indian police, she had been under surveillance for six months before her arrest.
