Working Lives Kyoto: Monk

Six very different Japanese people talk about their lives.

The Reverend Takafumi Kawakami is deputy head monk of the Shunko-in Buddhist Temple.

He lives and works in the temple - which dates from the 1590s. His American wife also lives there.

Rev Kawakami likens part of his role to that of a curator, helping maintain the building. He also chants and leads ceremonies, and supplements the temple's income by holding English-language meditation classes and officiating weddings.
