India has one of the highest recorded numbers of people with diabetes in the world at over 60 million.

Lifestyle, obesity and genetic susceptibility are key contributory factors.

Some medical experts also believe that babies who are undernourished in the mother's womb are also at an increased risk.

The Health Show is broadcast on BBC World News on Saturdays at 1010 and 2010 GMT and on Sundays at 0710 and 2310 GMT. The programme is supported by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
