Gaza conflict: Is there hope for a ceasefire?

Violence has intensified in Gaza and John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, has warned that the situation could "spiral downwards" as neither side will find it easy to step back.

Israel said they were determined to step up the pressure on Hamas, until the organisation "no longer posed a threat".

The BBC's diplomatic correspondent James Robbins analyses the ever-growing difficulty of securing a ceasefire.
