Gaza: What are the obstacles to peace?

24 July 2014 Last updated at 19:26 BST

The UK Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond, who is in Egypt trying to help in the effort to find a peace plan, has called on Hamas to agree to a humanitarian ceasefire without pre-conditions.

Khaled Meshaal, the leader of Hamas, said there could be no ceasefire to ease the conflict in Gaza without an end to Israel's blockade.

The Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accused Hamas of using Palestinians as human shields, something Hamas has again denied.

BBC's James Robbins reports.
