Egypt's army chief and defence minister, Field Marshal Abdul Fattah al-Sisi, has announced that he has resigned from the military in order to run in presidential elections due next month.

In a televised address, he made what amounted to a campaign speech.

Critics describe him as a military hardliner who has stifled dissent.
