A Democrat congressman has welcomed US President Barack Obama's decision to put military action against Syria on hold.

Jim Moran told BBC News he believed pursuing diplomacy to remove the regime's chemical weapons was the right course of action.

"I think we're going in the right direction.," he said.

"After the mistake that was Iraq, Americans don't want to repeat it again," he added.
