5 September 2013 Last updated at 18:48 BST

The BBC's Middle East editor Jeremy Bowen says that while life continues in Damascus, tension is rising and people are alarmed at the possibility of an attack by the US.

He said there were major stumbling blocks to a proposed peace conference, including an opposition with numerous factions.

"I think there is no scope right now for anything other than fire fighting diplomacy," he added.
