Iraq protests over politicians' pay

1 September 2013 Last updated at 06:23 BST

Thousands of Iraqis have defied security threats and taken to the streets to demonstrate against what they say are excessive privileges and benefits enjoyed by members of parliament.

Iraqi politicians are entitled to pension payments far higher than other workers.

The Iraqi prime minister said that he supported the demands, and would work to amend the salaries of high-profile officials.

Lucas de Jong reports.
