Civilian suffering in Syrian capital Damascus
The number of Syrians fleeing the country's conflict has reached one million, with neighbouring countries struggling to cope - according to the UN refugee agency.
Millions more civilians who remain within the country have been forced from their homes and are in need of food aid.
