UN to vote on upgrading Palestine status

Help

The United Nations is to vote on whether or not to upgrade Palestine's status from "observer" to "observer state", granting it formal recognition.

The vote is seen as a largely symbolic milestone but it would allow them to participate in debates at the UN and improve their chances of joining UN agencies, although the process was neither automatic nor guaranteed.

The move faces stiff opposition from Israel and America.
