The United States has said it will help the Lebanese government investigate the car bombing in Beirut, which killed the country's internal security chief, Wissam al-Hassan, on Friday.

The Lebanese opposition has accused Syria of being behind the bombing and has fiercely criticised the Prime Minister for not preventing the attack.

There were angry clashes between opposition supporters and armed police following Mr al-Hassan's funeral on Sunday.

Jeremy Bowen reports.
