The UN and Arab League peace envoy, Kofi Annan, has said the crisis in Syria can not be allowed to drag on indefinitely, but there is no point in issuing deadlines without agreement from those involved in the conflict.
He was speaking in Moscow after meeting senior Russian officials.
In Syria itself, it is reported government forces are still bombarding neighbourhoods in Homs.
The BBC is restricted from reporting inside Syria. Jim Muir reports from neighbouring Lebanon.
